The Rocaille, Claret

An arched frame with a restrained shell crest and a fine beaded inner edge, The Rocaille has a pared-back silhouette that lets a bold fabric choice do much of the talking.

Its name comes from rocaille, the shell-and-scroll ornament that defined eighteenth-century French decorative carving, still visible in the crest above the glass.

As with every Fandangle mirror, the frame is entirely hand-dressed in fabric. Some fabrics are new, some properly antique, and all are chosen for pattern, weight and story rather than convenience. Individual fabrics may resurface again in time, but no two combinations are ever repeated. Every result is one of a kind.

This Claret edition brings together a rich cotton velvet, several lengths of antique cotton, a modern striped cotton and a contemporary embroidered silk satin, now end of line, so this exact length will not be seen again.

At its centre sits a length from a silk mill with heritage spanning more than a century. Old and new, humble and storied, dressed side by side.
