The Pier, Magenta

Tall, slender and full of drama, The Pier takes its name from the architectural term for the narrow stretch of wall between two windows, exactly where a mirror like this was traditionally hung to catch daylight and reflect it back into the room.

This pair keeps those elegant proportions, with a scrolled shell crest at the head and foot, narrow enough to hang either side of a doorway, window, console table, or each other. Sold and hung as a pair, the two mirrors are not identically dressed. Both halves share the same fabrics, arranged in a different composition across each frame, echoing rather than repeating one another.

Each mirror is entirely hand-covered in fabric, some contemporary, some genuinely antique, and the occasional length woven in a mill with centuries of history behind it. Individual fabrics may occasionally turn up again, but the exact combination assembled for a given piece will not be repeated. No two Piers will ever be dressed the same.

This Magenta edition brings together eight fabrics: a rich velvet, several romantic Regency-inspired cottons scattered with decadent bouquets, a length of contemporary ticking fabric, and vintage and antique cottons chosen for their faded, well-loved character.

A now-discontinued silk from a present-day maker sits alongside, and at the centre of it all is a silk from a mill that has been weaving since the seventeenth century. Old sits deliberately against new throughout. The silk is end of line, so no further batches will be made. Once this length is gone, it is gone for good.
